I read Yasmin Zaher’s novel this weekend and was drawn in by its relatable themes of inheritance and designer handbags. The Coin delves deeply into the intricacies of identity through a young Palestinian woman in NYC.

While the protagonist grapples with teaching and secretly reselling luxury bags, Zaher uses cleanliness as a metaphor for control. We see defiance of labels through contradictions and experiences with trauma, fashion, education and self-discovery.

Although it wasn’t as deep as I hoped, The Coin was an honest and fun read. I wish it explored more subplots around characters like her brother and uncle. Fingers crossed Zaher revisits them in a sequel!
